Discover Your Purpose in the Coming Months: A Life-Changing Journey

Finding Your New Direction
After experiencing a breakup, I found myself grappling with the question of my life's purpose. Moving to New York had been my driving force for so long, but post-breakup, I felt lost and aimless for nearly nine months.
That changed dramatically when I received a phone call from my mother this week.
“Unfortunately, I have some distressing news. Rich has been diagnosed with lung cancer.”
The weight of those words hit me hard. It felt eerily familiar; just a year ago, my mother battled ovarian cancer and underwent significant surgery. Now, her partner of two decades faces a similar ordeal.
We shared an emotional moment over the phone.
After taking a few days to process this news, I realized that on a personal level, this could serve as the wake-up call I desperately needed. Rich's diagnosis may have ignited a new sense of purpose within me.
Reevaluating Motivation
For a while, I had struggled to find a compelling reason to work hard. My mindset had revolved around the high cost of living in New York—thinking I needed to earn more simply to get by. However, that drive diminished, and life lost its vibrancy, leaving me with no motivation to move forward.
But now, I've identified a new "why": supporting my mother and Rich in their retirement.
What does this entail?
I don’t envision giving them a lump sum; they both find fulfillment in their work. However, I could send them around $2,000 monthly, easing their financial burden and allowing them to enjoy life without the constant worry of money. Alternatively, I could save a sum over five years to gift them on a special occasion.
In any case, the idea of helping them retire provides me with a sense of purpose that reignites my passion for work.
What Drives You?
As Nietzsche famously said, “He who has a why to live for can endure any how.” I encountered this profound notion in Victor Frankl's "Man’s Search for Meaning." Frankl endured unimaginable suffering in Auschwitz during WWII, driven by the hope of reuniting with his wife and daughter.
What motivates you?
Your purpose doesn’t need to be grand or ostentatious. While the idea of donating substantial sums to charitable causes is commendable, it may not resonate with everyone. For many, children often become their purpose, serving as a motivator in life.
Remember, there’s no right or wrong answer, and you don’t have to figure it all out instantly. If you choose the path of freelancing or online income, having a purpose will help maintain your sanity.
Uncovering Your Purpose
Finding your purpose can sometimes feel like a serendipitous journey. The harder you chase it, the more elusive it seems—much like happiness, which cannot be pursued but must unfold naturally, as Frankl noted.
If you’re looking for more practical steps, consider these five approaches:
Journaling
Julia Cameron’s "Morning Pages" is an excellent starting point. Dedicate ten minutes each morning to write freely, allowing your thoughts to flow and clearing mental clutter. You may discover insights about yourself along the way.
Volunteer
I spent three years volunteering with Samaritans during my university days. The experience was as beneficial for me as it was for the individuals seeking help. Engaging with others in their struggles provided me a profound connection to reality.
Nurture Relationships
As a digital nomad, I’ve enjoyed many experiences around the globe. Yet, my happiest moments often stem from simple activities—playing cards with my family or hiking with friends. Relationships provide life with depth and meaning.
Consider Parenthood or Pets
While it may sound trivial, many find purpose through raising children or caring for pets.
Allow Yourself to Rest
After sharing my struggles in a recent article, a reader wisely advised me: "TAKE A BREAK, SCOTT." Sometimes, stepping back can provide clarity.
Picking Up the Pieces
In the week following my realization, my productivity surged beyond what I’ve achieved all year. I created a four-day challenge for writers committed to their goals, designed a five-day email course to help aspiring freelancers earn their first $1,000, and resumed writing articles for Medium—all while managing client work and contributing to a paid membership.
It appears that my newfound "why" is indeed propelling me forward. I encourage you to take the next four months to discover your own purpose.
If you find yourself feeling lost, remember that a strong sense of purpose can be your guiding light. And if you already have clarity, you’ve got nothing to lose by exploring further.
