Achieving Work Satisfaction Through Patience and Wisdom

Chapter 1: The Role of Patience in Professional Growth
In the workplace, experience often leads to what we term wisdom. However, it raises the question of whether this perceived wisdom is truly built upon a solid foundation of patience.
For instance, consider this scenario: Have you ever been away from the office and failed to respond to an “URGENT” request, only to return and discover the issue had resolved itself? Many of us who have taken extended breaks from work can relate to this experience.
What insights can we draw from this? It could indicate that people frequently mislabel requests as urgent when they may not be. Alternatively, those with genuine urgent needs might have found alternative solutions during your absence. This leads to the question: why did they initially approach you when other options were available?
Section 1.1: Understanding Legitimate Requests
When a request clearly falls within your job responsibilities, it is reasonable for colleagues to seek your assistance. Most of us are open to genuine requests, provided they are communicated appropriately.
However, a legitimate request can become an undue burden when the requester delays action due to poor time management. We've all experienced urgent requests that could have been made much earlier, only to become pressing issues because of someone else's negligence.
To mitigate this, my company’s chairman established two fundamental guidelines for making requests:
- Always consider that the person you are approaching is likely as busy as you are. They are not just waiting for your request to come through.
- Tailor your deadlines according to the nature of the task. Shorter deadlines can be proposed for quick responses, while more time should be allowed for tasks requiring extensive effort.
While these rules may seem straightforward, it’s crucial to reflect on how often they are actually followed in practice.

Section 1.2: Handling Requests Beyond Your Job Scope
Now, let’s discuss requests that extend beyond the boundaries of your role. Although there are many tasks you could undertake, it’s essential to remain focused on your primary responsibilities.
Have you ever found yourself stepping in to complete a task that belonged to a co-worker? Perhaps they asked politely, and you didn’t want to refuse. Maybe you felt you could do it faster and save time on correcting their errors later.
However, this tendency can inadvertently undermine your own success. If you hold significant responsibilities, you’re already occupied with your own tasks and strategic priorities. Adjusting your priorities to accommodate a colleague’s lack of initiative only serves to enable their behavior and ultimately harms your own productivity.
Chapter 2: The Value of Maintaining Your Priorities
No matter how urgent the requests you receive may seem, it’s crucial to stay focused on your own work and established priorities.
By not reacting impulsively to requests that attempt to distract you from your responsibilities, you allow others to see that you won’t engage in their crises. Those who mismanage their time should face the consequences of their actions. If they escalate their concerns to your supervisor, rest assured that your manager will recognize the source of the problem.
When a truly urgent matter arises that aligns with your priorities, you can address it with a clear conscience.
In conclusion, remain steadfast in your own priorities. There’s no need for confrontations or resentment—just patience. Perhaps that is the essence of true wisdom after all.
Be well.
