Adding Another iRobot Roomba to My Collection: A Smart Upgrade

Chapter 1: Expanding My Roomba Family
In my quest for the ultimate cleaning solution, I've amassed a collection of Roombas—one for each floor and a few extras that are nearing the end of their life. My experience with these devices has included some repairs, but I've learned that sending them off for fixing can be as expensive as buying a new one. This is often the case with many gadgets today!
My latest acquisition is the J7+ model, a notable upgrade from the I3+ I purchased last year, which I previously reviewed. The I3+ has proven reliable, but the J7+ has introduced several advancements.
While this paragraph provides a quote, it's intended to highlight the evolution of Roomba technology.
Section 1.1: Innovations in the iRobot J7+
What enhancements has iRobot integrated into their new J7 model? Aside from a sleek, darker design and a more compact cleaning base, the standout feature is its obstacle avoidance technology. When this model was launched, its ability to navigate around wires and miscellaneous items in our busy homes was a major selling point. If you're concerned about children leaving socks, shoes, or blankets on the floor, this vacuum is designed to steer clear of those obstacles and is less likely to get stuck. Moreover, iRobot offers a guarantee against pet waste; if it encounters any, they'll replace the unit within a year. Although I don't have pets, my household is filled with potential hindrances, so any improvement in avoiding jams during cleaning is a welcome addition.
After a couple of weeks of testing, the J7 completed a thorough mapping of our main floor. I was impressed by the accuracy of the mapping; while the I3 series provided a solid foundation, the J7 goes further by designating specific rooms.
Once the initial mapping is finished, users can label and divide rooms. This feature is particularly useful when you want your Roomba to focus on cleaning a specific area. Older Roomba models required physical barriers to restrict access, but now you can simply instruct the Roomba to clean a designated room. It will depart from its base, complete the cleaning, and return automatically. The added carpet detection feature is also noteworthy, as it highlights areas with throw rugs.
Section 1.2: User-Friendly Features
The app includes a “favorites” section that allows you to schedule recurring cleanings. For instance, the kitchen is our high-traffic area and a favored spot for the Roomba. Additionally, there’s an option to vacuum every room at once.
How does the J7 navigate obstacles and accurately map each room? The integration of a front-facing visible light camera, alongside enhanced software, has significantly boosted the intelligence of this model. Now, the vacuum can identify and respond to obstacles effectively. The Roomba even features a headlight for improved visibility!
A word of caution: regular maintenance is still required for your Roomba units. I routinely detach the beater rollers to clear out accumulated fibers and hairs after a week of cleaning. This process is straightforward and more user-friendly compared to previous models. One of my favorite upgrades is the new beater brush design.
Helpful Tip: While the cleaning base collects most dirt, you will need to empty the dust bin on the J7 from time to time. Additionally, remember to replace the air filter periodically, as it can become clogged over time. Using another vacuum with a crevice tool is an effective way to clean out the dustbin.
As technology continues to advance, I anticipate even better models in the future. For now, I'll likely hold off on purchasing another iRobot device for a few years, curious to see what innovations lie ahead!
