Embracing Stillness: Finding Peace Amidst the Noise
Written on
Chapter 1: The Burden of Noise
In our quest for tranquility, we often overlook the chaos surrounding us. A few weeks ago, my wife and I decided to cancel our cable subscription. The decision stemmed from an enlightening experience while preparing for tax season. My CPA provided a tax organizer, prompting me to gather various financial records.
As I reviewed our monthly expenses, I was struck by the hefty bill for cable and internet services. Even with a premium package, the cost felt comparable to a car payment. This revelation sparked a discussion about our growing discontent with television.
Despite the occasional service hiccups, our primary complaints revolved around the incessant noise and lackluster content. Commercials are not just numerous; they are often louder than the programs, turning them into mere background noise that we routinely mute.
When we do find a worthwhile movie, it is rare. More often than not, we scroll through a sea of re-runs, uninspiring reality shows, politically charged broadcasts disguised as news, repetitive Spanish channels, and an endless array of infomercials.
Chapter 2: The Irrelevance of Television
Frequently, we find ourselves gravitating towards local news. While my wife distracts herself with mobile games, I tune into my iPad, seeking enlightening TedTalks or intriguing photography videos. Despite its rising costs, television seems increasingly irrelevant and unenjoyable.
Yet, we still turn it on every night, perhaps out of fear of solitude.
My wife, a hospice nurse, endures long shifts on weekends, often returning home late. My weekends are filled with reading, writing, and spending time outdoors. While waiting for her, I often resort to the TV for background noise, scrolling through my iPad. However, YouTube presents its own set of distractions, loaded with intrusive ads and superficial content.

One evening, I decided to explore the music channels on our television. I chose a light classical station and made myself a cup of coffee. As I settled down with my journal to sketch and reflect, I was astonished by the transformation of my living room.
The previously chaotic scene, dominated by a flashing screen and annoying commercials, had morphed into a peaceful sanctuary. The gentle strains of classical music, the aroma of coffee, and the soft glow of a lamp created a serene environment that calmed my spirit.
When my wife arrived home, she found me peacefully doodling with a warm beverage in hand. “Well, isn’t this relaxing,” she remarked.

Chapter 3: Yearning for Authenticity
In moments like these, we realize that many of us crave genuine relaxation in a world filled with chaos. The Super Bowl commercials serve as a reflection of our society; some viewers even find the ads more entertaining than the game itself.
This year’s ads contained both touching and trivial moments. However, one particular Google Pixel ad stood out. It began with soothing music and beautiful visuals, only to be abruptly interrupted by jarring noise and disarray.
This dissonance mirrors how many of us feel today. Peggy Noonan, in a recent essay titled “America’s Longing for Authenticity,” articulated this sentiment: “The ad makers must have asked themselves: What does America want? And answered: dumb, loud, depthless, and broken. I’m here to say I’ve met America and that’s not what they want. What they want is ‘Help me live, help my kids live, help me feel something true.’”

Chapter 4: Cultivating Calm
We need not be prisoners of noise. A life filled with tranquility, peace, and authenticity is within our reach. If you desire a calm heart, begin by transforming your home environment.
Rediscover the soothing effects of quiet music and engrossing literature. Settle into a comfortable chair with a warm drink, perhaps accompanied by a cat, and observe the positive shift in your mood. Consider lighting a candle to enhance this peaceful atmosphere.
“The ideal of calm exists in a sitting cat.” — Jules Renard
If you haven’t engaged in this practice for a while or find yourself glued to the flickering screens and relentless algorithms of social media, it may take some time to adapt.
Yet, the effort will be rewarding.
