Rediscovering Life: Embrace Joy Beyond Success

Chapter 1: The Pursuit of Intentional Living
If you've been following my writings for some time, you might have noticed my frequent discussions about the importance of intentional and slow living.
Occasionally, friends inquire why I focus on these themes instead of trending subjects that could potentially increase my income. These are the same friends who often share strategies on "how to monetize your skills." Take a moment to reflect on that.
Recently, I found myself pondering this question as well. There are countless articles on platforms like Medium discussing "the keys to success" or "habits of highly effective individuals." Such pieces consistently top the charts, making me consider redirecting my writing towards more profitable topics.
Yet, something holds me back. Each time I contemplate crafting a headline that promises to "reveal all the secrets," I feel an uncomfortable jolt, as if a wave of negativity has washed over me. In contrast, when I delve into subjects that ignite my passion, I feel a wave of relief, reminiscent of summer enveloping me in warmth. In simpler terms, I feel invigorated and truly alive.
At its core, writing is what matters, right? It doesn't necessarily hinge on the subject matter. However, this perspective doesn't entirely resonate with me. Why, you ask?
Because breathing isn't synonymous with truly living.
Many harbor the belief that achieving success, finding a partner, settling debts, healing emotional wounds, and earning love from others will lead to a more liberated existence. Perhaps you disagree, having never fully contemplated this notion. You might not have compiled a list of your achievements. Yet, deep down, we're all somewhat shackled.
What we truly desire is simple. We long to inhale serenity, breathe out positivity, and fill our souls with love from those around us.
But what went awry? How did we complicate our lives so excessively? Why do we find ourselves feeling despondent, and our spirits weighed down? Why do our eyes seem devoid of life?
You may perceive this as a motivational discourse, but I assure you, it's rooted in frustration. Let me explain.
I've been learning how to crochet, and tomorrow I’ll be attempting to create a mobile sling through crocheting. Today, after dedicating four hours to practice, I felt excitement for the first time in months. My days had become a monotonous cycle of waking, dressing, eating, working, sleeping, and repeating. When freed from my work obligations, I often resorted to mindlessly scrolling through social media or fretting over matters beyond my control.
I previously thought I lacked the time to acquire new skills, convinced that returning to old habits wouldn’t contribute to my financial gain or enhance my productivity. Ironically, I somehow found hours to spend on social media.
I know I'm not alone in this struggle. I observe young individuals in their twenties seemingly overwhelmed by life. Simultaneously, I witness those in their fifties wishing they'd explored more, laughed louder, and followed their hearts' desires.
This reality frustrates me. Knowing that I could have embraced crocheting much earlier but didn’t, despite its joy, weighs heavily on my mind.
Why do we often neglect pursuits that genuinely bring us joy?
Ultimately, the truth is, no one will remember you.
If I were to pass away tomorrow, few would recall the name Renuka. You'd simply shift your attention to the next writer. That's the nature of my profession. What you do for others may fade into obscurity, but what you do for your own fulfillment will remain etched in your memories, bringing warmth and laughter as you age.
As I compose this piece, my motivation isn't solely to inform you but to express my own thoughts. Writing brings me joy, and the possibility that it may resonate with someone else enhances my sense of self-worth. Thus, this isn't just about you; it's about me.
When I perform acts of kindness, months later, I often feel an internal glow that reassures me of my goodness. Conversely, when I miss an opportunity to help, the regret lingers for far too long. Ultimately, your actions should revolve around your own happiness, making you feel more alive and excited about life.
Returning to my crochet journey, it has reignited a sense of vitality within me. After years, I’ve taken on the role of a student, focusing on something tangible instead of fleeting distractions.
Crocheting is merely one thread in the fabric of my life. It's a metaphor for the feeling of truly being alive.
I’m not insisting that you take on new challenges if time is limited; rather, I'm urging you to learn the art of living. Don’t just breathe—truly feel. Embrace the air that fills your lungs.
Engage in the activities you've always desired. Perhaps save for a trip to a new destination and relish the anticipation. Dedicate a Sunday to exploring your city’s hidden gems. Surprise loved ones with their favorite home-cooked meal. Treat yourself to a movie and savor the experience alone.
The essence of existence isn’t just to survive but to truly live. We find ourselves in an era that requires us to learn how to live, as society has conditioned us to chase success, fame, and validation.
But where has that led us? Where do you find yourself amidst all this? Do you feel fulfilled flaunting your social status, or do you find joy in the memories created during a heartfelt journey?
I'm not questioning your life choices, but consider this line from an Indian song:
“No one is happy in the new colors of the world.”
Tell me, is that inaccurate? Look around, and you'll notice the vacant expressions of those who insist they have everything figured out. Life was meant to be uncomplicated, enjoyable, and exhilarating.
My advice is straightforward: pursue what brings you joy. Experiment with different paths to discover what resonates with you. Learn new skills, curate a Pinterest board of your interests, and leave heartfelt notes of encouragement for others. Read enriching literature, explore captivating places (even those nearby), and share meaningful moments with everyone you cherish—not just romantic partners.
Most importantly, do what infuses your life with excitement. Refrain from relinquishing the joy of living.
Conclusion
I can’t pinpoint why I wrote this reflection. Perhaps it stems from an earnest desire to embrace new experiences and live more fully. Yet, I will persist in reminding you: Your life is a story only you can write. Avoid repeating the same chapters endlessly. Fill those blank pages with new adventures. Make mistakes, learn from them, and enjoy the journey. Introduce fresh faces into your narrative, allowing them to depart when they wish. Above all, learn the true art of living.
