Don't Believe the Hype: Starting a Newsletter is Worth It!

Chapter 1: Overcoming Doubts About Newsletters
Are you hesitant about launching a newsletter?
Let me assure you, it’s a great idea! Here’s a look at some common misconceptions from those who discourage you from building an email list, and why I believe these claims are unfounded.
"You’re wasting your time."
This is one of my favorites. The New York Times once posed the question, "Are We Past Peak Newsletter?" The answer is a resounding no! You are not squandering your efforts. Substack currently boasts 3 million paying subscribers, which shows there is a thriving market for newsletters. We are not at the end of the newsletter boom; now is the perfect moment to dive in!
Section 1.1: The Myth of Needing an Existing Following
Another common myth is that you must have a following before starting. Many will tell you that if you don’t know your audience or niche, you’ll fail. They suggest beginning on platforms like Medium or Vocal to build an audience first, then transition to an email list.
This is completely misguided! You can write and grow your email list at the same time. This approach allows you to focus on acquiring subscribers, who are far more valuable than mere followers, as they represent potential customers for your products and services.
Subsection 1.1.1: Finding Your Niche
You may also hear that you need to have a clearly defined niche from the start. This isn’t true! You can start with a broad topic, such as "happy and healthy living," and refine your focus as you grow. Building in public, especially on a platform like Substack, enables you to discover the intersection of your interests and your audience's preferences.
Section 1.2: Monetizing a Small List
Another misconception is that you need a massive email list to generate income. I know newsletter creators with as few as 50 subscribers who earn six figures by offering niche-focused content. A small, engaged audience of “true fans” can be incredibly lucrative.
Chapter 2: The Importance of Diversification
You might also hear that you should concentrate on just one platform. This notion of "shiny object syndrome" suggests that mastering a single platform is essential before branching out. However, this is misleading!
If you limit your efforts to one platform, you may miss out on valuable insights from other audiences. Many of my students successfully republish their Medium articles on various platforms and see significant engagement. If your content isn’t resonating on one site, don’t assume it lacks value; it might simply not align with that platform's user base.

Section 2.1: Learning as You Go
Finally, you might be told that you need to master the art of newsletter creation first. This isn’t necessary! You can begin your journey and improve your writing skills along the way. Platforms like Substack allow you to craft an entire publication, complete with a logo and design, which can evolve as your vision becomes clearer.
