Surviving Summer Break: Tips for Families and Parents

Written on

Chapter 1: The Summer Break Challenge

It's a typical Monday morning at 8:00 AM during summer break. My kids have somehow thrived on a diet consisting mostly of ice cream, grilled cheese, chocolate bars, and chicken tenders for the last three days straight. A fresh week awaits them, presenting an opportunity for a positive start! Perhaps we could introduce some fruit, yogurt, granola, or even scrambled eggs into their morning. A light workout or a bit of reading followed by a jog are also possibilities. The options seem limitless.

Fast forward to 10:30 AM. The past two and a half hours unfolded like this:

  • Initial effort to get all three kids dressed, fed, and teeth brushed.
  • A second attempt (10 minutes later).
  • A third attempt (20 minutes later).
  • A fourth attempt (25 minutes later). Aggravation is starting to creep in, but I’m trying my best to stay calm.

One child is in the midst of an existential crisis, questioning why there isn’t an app to handle exercising for her. Another child is moving at a snail's pace while getting dressed, and the last one is searching online to see if morning exercise could be classified as child abuse in Florida.

Two hours have slipped by, and I find myself contemplating surrender. I hate that thought, but I feel compelled to channel my inner Jean Claude Van Damme and challenge them to a race against time—get ready in five minutes or face the consequences!

And that, folks, is a glimpse into how two and a half months of summer vacation unfolds in our home. Thrilling, isn’t it?

While I genuinely cherish summer with my kids and view it as a time for them to escape their usual routines, try new activities, travel, and unwind, getting everyone on the same page can be a daunting task. On the same day my wife hopes to enjoy a movie at a local theater, my youngest wants karaoke, the middle child prefers a trip to the mall, and the oldest wants to be as far away from us as possible. When you add procrastination, teenage angst, and hormones into the mix, it feels like a scene from "Mission: Impossible."

Another challenge? Balancing an eventful summer with the risk of financial ruin. Living in South Florida means that an outing for a family of five can cost as much as a used 2008 Toyota Corolla on Craigslist. Add a meal at Chili's, and suddenly, you’re looking at a 2012 model!

Maintaining a healthy routine over the summer poses another dilemma. Sure, it's vacation time, but routines are essential for our well-being, right? When my wife and I return from work, our home resembles the aftermath of a tornado. And don’t even get me started on their dietary and exercise habits! We pride ourselves on our healthy lifestyle, but come summer, it all seems to vanish through the drive-thru window.

Still, despite the chaos, I wouldn’t trade these experiences for anything. Life without my little tornadoes would feel incomplete. While managing multiple children can be overwhelming (sorry, only-child households, but you don't know how easy you have it), it’s also the most rewarding aspect of my life. My kids will forever be my world, though I do wish they came with warning labels about the challenges of summer.

So, what advice do you have for surviving summer break with kids? How do you maintain your sanity while keeping them entertained? Any tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated!
