A slight increase in body temperature can create an inhospitable environment for pathogens, yet we are not designed to maintain those elevated temperatures indefinitely. Fevers are intended to aid us, but their symptoms can often feel more debilitating than the actual illness.

Why do we experience fevers? The conventional wisdom suggests that they are beneficial in fighting infections. While this notion is logical—similar to how we boil water to kill bacteria—the complications that arise from elevated body temperature can undermine the benefits.
