Understanding Genetics vs. Epigenetics: Key Insights
Written on
This article discusses essential points regarding DNA testing along with my personal reflections based on experience. I also recognize prevalent concerns found in literature about genetic information and share my method for addressing these issues.
As a biohacker and technology enthusiast, I've found genetics (DNA) testing to be captivating. Technologically, it represents an innovative and impactful advancement. From a self-improvement angle, it serves as a valuable resource.
Nevertheless, some individuals view genetic information negatively. Even my family doctor advised against my choice to undergo DNA testing, labeling it a financial waste. However, I appreciate and respect differing opinions based on personal and scientifically validated reasons.
Globally, DNA testing for personal insights remains a contentious subject. The opinions can generally be categorized into three groups: supporters, detractors, and those indifferent or uninformed.
Opponents primarily express concern about the undue anxiety generated by predictions found in test results.
Limited studies have indicated that data from DNA tests can indeed provoke anxiety. One such study, titled “Learning one’s genetic risk changes physiology independent of actual genetic risk,” highlights these apprehensions.
While I acknowledge the potential negative impacts of genetic information on some individuals, my perspective, while respectful, diverges.
I regard DNA testing as a reflection of our future health based on our genetic background. While our genes certainly influence our health, factors like environment, emotions, mental state, and biology also play crucial roles.
Various types of genetic tests are available, with the most common being carrier, newborn, forensic, ancestral, diagnostic, predictive, and pre-symptomatic tests. My interest primarily lay in the latter two.
With an open and growth-oriented mindset, I embraced the information and insights from DNA testing. I viewed it as an exploration and prepared mentally for the process.
Before undergoing my DNA tests, I conditioned myself to interpret the results as indicative rather than definitive. I understood that these findings did not guarantee I would develop any conditions suggested by my genetic makeup, which helped mitigate potential anxiety.
I took the plunge and completed my DNA tests. Upon receiving the results three weeks later, I gained enhanced understanding of my ancestral background.
Two significant benefits emerged from the test results.
Firstly, I learned about my heritage. To my astonishment, my genetic background consisted of five different cultures. The dominant culture appeared to correlate with my behavioral tendencies and health conditions. My dietary habits were aligned with my ancestry.
Secondly, I acquired insights regarding my current genetic status and related health risk factors based on my genetic types.
The report presented a wealth of data but was limited in its explanatory content, directing users to qualified health professionals for interpretation.
This health information proved invaluable, allowing me to take proactive measures. Contrary to assertions of anxiety, knowing my weaknesses and risk factors did not cause me distress.
Understanding epigenetics enabled me to navigate genetic tests more effectively. Given the complexity of DNA data, I also sought the help of genetic consultants for detailed interpretation. The insights gained were well worth the investment.
Research in genetics has informed us that our genes can shape our future. However, the emerging field of epigenetics teaches us that other factors—such as diet, nutrition, stress, and environment—can influence whether our genes are activated or silenced.
For instance, despite having a diabetic parent, I maintain normal insulin levels thanks to dietary adjustments informed by this knowledge. My transformation journey is filled with similar examples.
Epigenetics, a burgeoning science, focuses on how changes in gene expression—not alterations in the genetic code—affect organisms.
Discovering epigenetics shifted my perspective on life, fostering a more optimistic and joyful outlook. I learned that we are not merely slaves to our genetic predispositions.
We possess the ability to activate beneficial genes and deactivate harmful ones through our choices and actions. This empowerment is refreshing for our physical and mental well-being, allowing us to design our lives intentionally.
One of the most impactful metabolic changes I've made to my genes has been adopting a ketogenic lifestyle, which I emphasize in the accompanying article.
