# Understanding the Stigma Surrounding Mental Illness and Addictions

Chapter 1: The Burden of Mental Illness Stigma

When discussing health issues, mental health carries a significant burden of stigma. This pervasive prejudice complicates the lives of those affected, making it challenging for them to navigate the world around them. Out of fear of judgment, many individuals conceal their symptoms, leading to isolation and its detrimental effects, primarily the lack of social interaction.

At the core of this prejudice is a tendency to devalue others, often stemming from a desire to elevate ourselves by comparison. While this behavior is commonplace, it comes at a cost to our shared humanity. Some individuals strive to self-reflect, yet the stigma and discrimination continue to be prevalent.

Those who engage in stigmatization might think, “What’s wrong with them? They should stay hidden to avoid burdening others. Surely, there must be a fundamental flaw in their character. It’s safer to keep my distance; they might lose control and become dangerous.” However, when mental illness touches our personal lives—impacting a family member or a loved one—the narrative shifts. We are often more inclined to think, “This is a brain issue; it’s not their fault; something went wrong.”

This shift in understanding requires intentional effort. I recall hearing a seemingly educated individual, who had previously worked in mental health, express frustration towards those suffering from mental illnesses by saying, “They should just snap out of it.” Fortunately, scientific advancements are beginning to change the landscape. Progress may be gradual, but it is consistent. The breakthroughs in genetics have fueled research significantly, leading to the introduction of more effective treatments. Consequently, an increasing number of individuals facing these challenges are finding their place in the workforce and establishing relationships with partners who are not similarly affected.

Despite these strides, much work still lies ahead. A recent article in the NY Times addressed the stigma faced by individuals benefiting from weight loss medications, with comments like, “What, you can’t do it on your own?” Resisting such stigmatization is crucial for those affected.

Years ago, I knew a mental health expert who had gained considerable weight. Despite being intelligent and attractive, she struggled to shed the pounds before the advent of modern weight loss medications. Back then, surgical options were the primary recourse to curb appetite. She made a decisive choice that transformed her life.

In the face of societal prejudice, individuals dealing with mental health issues, obesity, or any condition that triggers disdain must assert their worth. Michael J. Fox has made significant strides for those with Parkinson’s disease by openly discussing his condition. Al Sharpton, a prominent activist, was once significantly overweight; he now leads a healthier life. I suspect he underwent surgery to aid his weight loss, but I cannot confirm this.

Meanwhile, stigma continues to thrive, particularly regarding substance abuse. Addiction often leads individuals down a challenging path, and the repercussions are profound. Since 1999, nearly one million Americans have succumbed to drug overdoses—a staggering loss of lives.

With scientific progress, it is imperative to reassess our perceptions. Mental illnesses that can be alleviated through medication should be regarded as biological conditions—genetically influenced and requiring targeted treatments. By reframing our understanding in this way, we can diminish the prejudices surrounding these issues.
