# Embracing the Latest Tech: My Experience with the M2 MacBook Air

Chapter 1: My Journey with New Technology
In the past, I vowed to refrain from purchasing new tech simply for the sake of having the latest gadgets. Remarkably, I have managed to stick to this promise—mostly.
However, I recently acquired a new piece of technology without spending a dime. Although I won't delve into the specifics of how this came about, I must say I am thrilled with this addition. It's not just about getting it for free; this device is genuinely impressive.
So, what is this new tech? Drum roll, please... it's the M2 MacBook Air featuring 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage—the pricier base model.
While I already own an M1 MacBook Air and didn't necessarily need another laptop, the allure of the M2 version was too strong to resist, especially at no cost.
Since then, I have been primarily using the M2 MacBook Air for my writing tasks, and I must admit, I am pleasantly surprised by its performance.
The Good Aspects
I initially thought I wouldn’t notice much of a performance boost over the M1 model, considering my typical usage. I mainly use Ulysses for writing (with Apple Pages on occasion), browse the internet on both Safari and Chrome (usually with only 4 or 5 tabs open), and check emails or jot down notes.
These activities are not demanding enough to truly test the capabilities of any modern computer. However, I did observe a slight performance enhancement; applications load a tad faster, and everything operates a bit more fluidly—just enough to make a difference. Then again, it might just be a psychological effect.
Another unexpected delight was the display. The screen, which shines at 500 nits when fully bright, is not only brighter but the slight increase in diagonal size due to narrower bezels is noticeable. Who knew that a mere fraction of an inch could make such an impact?
One of the standout features is the return of the MagSafe charging port, which opens up both Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports for connecting additional devices. This is definitely a perk of the M2 MacBook Air compared to its predecessor.
Lastly, the new design aligns more closely with the larger, more powerful MacBook Pro models, making it harder to distinguish between them at a glance. The chassis now has a uniform thickness all around, marking a significant shift from the Air’s classic wedge shape. I will discuss this change further later.
The Not-So-Great Aspects
The first item on the downside list is somewhat subjective; it's more of a personal preference than a flaw. I have always admired the MacBook Air’s original wedge design. Its angle made it comfortable for wrist support while typing and, honestly, I just liked its aesthetic appeal, even if some consider it outdated.
That said, I don't dislike the new design; it’s just taking me a little time to adjust. The squared-off look isn’t truly a negative—just a change.
The only significant drawback relates to the number and placement of the ports, specifically the Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports. Unlike its larger Pro counterparts, the Air is limited to two TB4/USB-C ports, both located on the left side of the laptop.
While the reintroduction of the MagSafe charging port alleviates some of the limitations posed by the two TB4/USB-C ports, having both ports on one side can complicate cable management.
This has been a recurring criticism since the M1 MacBook Air was launched, and it seems Apple has not addressed it. While it is not a dealbreaker, having a port on each side would have been a helpful addition.
In summary, if these are the most significant complaints I have, things can’t be that bad.
Would I Endorse the M2 MacBook Air?
Absolutely, yes! The M2 MacBook Air is a lightweight, powerful laptop that exceeds expectations, all while boasting a fanless unibody design.
Though the M1 MacBook Air remains a fantastic device, if your budget allows for the M2 variant, I wholeheartedly recommend making that investment. You won’t regret it.
For those on a tighter budget, the M1 MacBook Air is still a strong choice, offering plenty of power for years of use. If you’re in the market for a premium laptop without breaking the bank, consider jumping on the M2 while it’s available. Rumors suggest that Apple won’t unveil an M3 MacBook Air until 2024.
Apple laptops are known for their longevity, which was a significant factor in my switch from Windows to Mac.
In closing, don’t let the anticipation for the next big thing deter you from acquiring this exceptional product now. I plan to utilize the M2 MacBook Air for many years, and I’m confident that you will enjoy it just as much if you give it a try.
Until next time…
