Embracing Spirituality to Overcome Character Flaws

Chapter 1: Understanding Character Defects
Are you truly eager to evolve into a better version of yourself, or do you feel a reliance on your flaws?
Step 6 emphasizes, “Are you completely prepared to have God take away all these character flaws?” Recall that in Step 2, we began to view our Higher Power as a compassionate and non-judgmental entity, eager to assist us in achieving a more fulfilling life.
By the time we reach Step 6, we should be experiencing the positive shifts in our lives. While we acknowledge our flaws, we might still feel uncertain about addressing them.
If you find yourself in this position, consider revisiting Step 3 to deepen your understanding of what a Higher Power signifies in your life. It’s essential to engage actively with our programs daily to the best of our capacity.
Are you prepared to transform your life from despair to happiness, joy, and liberation from the chains of substance dependence? If you’re ready for change, Step 6 invites you to “follow me!”
This step urges us to be COMPLETELY READY! It’s not merely about feeling that you’ve had enough to give it a shot. After seeking my Higher Power's assistance with this step, I commit to transforming my life and am willing to take any necessary actions to achieve it.
Though Step 6 is straightforward, it can become complicated if I attempt to interpret it in my own way.
Seeking assistance can also involve discussing our journey with sponsors for insights. If we do so, we’ll realize that our Higher Power can work through them as well.
Step 6 simply states that we are prepared. There’s no requirement for extensive contemplation or research. Are you COMPLETELY READY? If you are, we can progress to Step 7.
If not, you might as well return to your previous state, and we’ll gladly refund your misery. My approach to the program is firm, but I don’t impose that same rigidity on myself. This program and the community have instilled a true sense of conscience within me, distinct from the vague remorse I felt before joining.
This perspective allows me to avoid incessantly recounting my past struggles and recognizing that I am just one drink away from a downward spiral.
I can live my life joyfully, free from the chains of my own limitations and external pressures. This doesn’t mean I’ll be overly cheerful in somber situations; rather, I find comfort in knowing that I am consistently doing the “next right thing” in my life.
Embrace the joy of living. Appreciate the fact that you can genuinely experience life.
If you managed to stay away from substances today, you now have choices. Wouldn’t it be more enjoyable to sip on a milkshake through a straw than to face a dire situation?
Do you prefer misery, or do you opt for happiness, joy, and freedom? The decision lies solely with you. Choose wisely! Thank you, God!
