Chapter 1: Introducing Kingsley Asuamah
In recent days, I stumbled upon an intriguing article on Medium titled:
20 Captivating Facts About Self-Improvement You Should Know
The concept of a “Growth Mindset” has the potential to alter brain function: Research indicates that the belief in one’s capacity to learn and grow can lead to...

Each idea presented in this concise piece is not only fascinating but also serves as a springboard for deeper discussions. I wholeheartedly recommend giving it a read.
I reached out to the author, Kingsley Asuamah, proposing that we delve into these concepts through a series of posts. Our aim is to illustrate how writers from contrasting backgrounds—living in different regions and separated by decades—interpret these vital themes.
Kingsley was enthusiastic about the idea, recognizing that engaging in public discourse would foster mutual growth and learning for both of us, while also benefiting the entire Medium community.
Chapter 1.1: A Tale of Two Authors
Kingsley, a 36-year-old Nigerian now residing in Ireland, embarked on his journey to pursue a graduate degree overseas in his early thirties. In contrast, I was born and raised in the United States, where I still reside at the age of 59. While I have contemplated relocating, my wife and I found our brief stay in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in 2021 to be too challenging due to the climate.
Kingsley shared, “It took me nearly three years to save for the program, leading to two deferrals of my admission. I sold my car, appliances, and personal belongings to fund my relocation.”
As someone from an older generation, I have navigated numerous transformations in my life. Currently, I am transitioning from a long-standing career in real estate to pursuing writing and speaking with the intention of positively impacting lives.
Change is a complex process—both daunting and rewarding. Kingsley has already authored several books under the pseudonym Nda Esio, which I admire! Check out his work here:

Chapter 1.2: Reinventing Ourselves - Chris Compton
I enlisted in the US Navy at 19, initially struggling in college without a clear direction. Despite its challenges, the military offered a path to start anew.
At 34, I realized I was merely going through the motions, deeply dissatisfied with military life. With 15 years of service behind me, I was close to retirement, yet I chose to leave. The response from my family was predictable—one vote for leaving and many for staying the course.
With two young children, concerns about their future were abundant. Yet, I believed that attending to my own needs was essential for being a good parent.
It was a difficult decision to make, especially knowing it would disappoint my spouse, but prioritizing my well-being was necessary.
At 35, I found myself an unemployed veteran without a clear plan, facing the vast possibilities of life ahead of me—a liberating experience.
Chapter 1.3: Reinventing Ourselves - Kingsley Asuamah
Kingsley began his career as an IT professional in Nigeria, feeling like a “local champion.” However, he aspired for something greater and dreamed of creating globally impactful IT products.
He formulated a plan over three years, saving diligently and applying to a Master’s program in Ireland. The journey was fraught with challenges, and it ultimately took him three years to gather his resources, sell his possessions, and make the leap across the ocean.
Upon graduation, he received an offer to stay in Ireland, to which he replied, “Remember, I sold everything I owned, so there was nothing to return to.”
Now in his mid-thirties, Kingsley is settled in Ireland with his new wife, working in IT, writing on Medium, and brainstorming innovative software solutions to make a difference in the tech landscape.

When I asked Kingsley what he believes hinders others from making significant life changes, he replied, “Laziness. Many people wish for change but are unwilling to put in the necessary effort. For instance, everyone wants to be fit, yet most lack the commitment to frequent the gym and adopt a healthier lifestyle. I, too, share this struggle.”
Chapter 2: Writing About It - Kingsley’s Narrative
Kingsley joined Medium in 2016, well before I discovered the platform. He began writing during the Covid pandemic and has since published numerous articles.
He stated that Medium has always been a favored source of information for him. Writing in his areas of expertise felt like a natural progression.
When I inquired about his interest in self-improvement topics, he responded, “I’m constantly seeking ways to better myself. I am naturally drawn to articles on self-improvement, and I assumed others felt the same.”
Discussing his aspirations, Kingsley expressed his desire to build a legacy for his children and strive to be the best husband he can be.
Chapter 2.1: Writing About It - Chris’ Narrative
In 2023, I participated in the Ship 30 for 30 program, dedicating thirty days to learning about digital writing from Nicolas Cole and Dickie Bush. Much of what I published on X during this time was subpar.
I knew I had valuable insights to share but struggled to reach a broader audience. The algorithm on X seemed to confine my reach to fellow participants and a few random critics.
The most rewarding aspect of Ship 30 was connecting with others via Zoom calls to exchange ideas. One of these connections was with Kathleen Safron, who introduced me to Medium.
After I began posting on Medium, one of my early articles unexpectedly gained traction, far exceeding the audience of my previous posts. I recognized the platform's potential and decided to publish most of my work there. While Kingsley is more prolific, I am steadily working on my output.
Chapter 3: What Lies Ahead?
As you may recall, my initial connection with Kingsley stemmed from his article, “20 Captivating Facts About Self-Improvement You Should Know.”
We plan to explore the twenty facts presented in his piece. I will approach the subjects from the perspective of a nearly 60-year-old American, while Kingsley will provide insights as a 36-year-old Nigerian living in Ireland.
We hope that our collaboration will uncover fresh and engaging viewpoints on our self-improvement journeys, ultimately delivering valuable information to our audience.
We welcome your thoughts and participation as we embark on this joint endeavor.
