Chapter 1: The Perks of Being Single During the Holidays
Being single during the holiday season can feel daunting, especially when the societal norm celebrates couples. Social media is flooded with engagement announcements and festive gatherings featuring plus-ones. Yet, let's be honest: there's a unique beauty in solo time.
As a teacher, I relish my two-week break to indulge in activities that truly resonate with me. Honestly, aside from a couple of get-togethers with friends, the idea of socializing sounds exhausting. Instead, I’m ready to unwind, recharge, and enjoy my own company without any obligations.
While I wouldn't mind sharing my life with a special someone, I find immense joy in my independence. In fact, I cherish my solitary moments just as much as I would enjoy being part of a couple. Here’s why I value my time alone:
- I’m My Own Best Company: I've developed a close bond with myself, making solitude a source of joy.
- Self-Care Rituals: I engage in activities that nourish my spirit—coloring, listening to podcasts, practicing yoga, staying active, reading, writing, watching films, solving puzzles, and engaging in spiritual practices like meditation and journaling.
- Freedom from Obligations: I’m not responsible for anyone else's plans or preferences.
- Shopping on My Terms: No need to brave crowded malls for gift shopping, unless I choose to treat myself.
- Travel Freedom: I can plan vacations at my leisure or simply enjoy a staycation.
- Spontaneous Decisions: My plans can change based on my mood and state of mind.
- No Pressure: I can skip the anxiety-inducing questions about marriage or children that often come during family gatherings.
So, for those who feel disheartened about being single this holiday season, remember that your time alone is a gift! Embrace it fully! Your single status won’t last forever, so savor the freedom to do as you please.
This season can be stressful, but your mindset can change that. Being single doesn’t diminish your worth. You’re not falling behind if you’re not sharing engagement photos or couple selfies online. Celebrate where you are in life right now; there’s nothing wrong with your current situation.
Why not treat the holidays like any other day? Focus on the present and appreciate everything you have. Let this season be a time of relaxation and celebration for your achievements instead of a reminder of what you lack.
Spoiler alert: it can absolutely be all of these things.
