The Life of a Billionaire: A Reflection on Value and Sacrifice

Written on

Chapter 1: The Cost of Wealth

Last evening, my wife and I were unwinding after attending our daughter's local basketball tournament. We found ourselves in that relaxed state where we could only muster the energy to flip through channels briefly before settling on something that captured our interest.

We ended up watching Vertical Limit, a 2000 film featuring Chris O'Donnell, Bill Paxton, Scott Glenn, and Izabella Scorupco. After a moment of confusion about where we recognized her, I discovered she had appeared in Goldeneye.

This film didn't achieve great success, likely due to its plot, which critiques the reckless behavior of American billionaires who risk lives for the sake of their egos while climbing in the Himalayas. It seems our culture tends to suppress narratives that challenge the supposed superiority of the wealthy.

In my brief time on Mastodon, I’ve been surprised by the lack of narrative control that exists there. It's refreshing to see how reasonable discussions can emerge when one steps away from platforms that perpetuate negative propaganda blaming the impoverished for societal issues.

Vertical Limit isn't a film that requires a spoiler alert since the plot is predictable. A billionaire organizes a press conference to portray himself as a compassionate individual, only to reveal his true nature as a callous sociopath throughout the movie.

This led me to reflect on a troubling message that is consistently, albeit subtly, promoted in our society: the notion that the lives of billionaires hold greater value than those of ordinary individuals, including your loved ones and even your children.

Billionaires will readily sacrifice anyone for their convenience, even for something as trivial as drinking lukewarm coffee, without a moment's thought for the suffering they cause.

They truly believe their existence is more significant than yours, and our societal framework supports this belief. Deep down, you might accept it too—but this notion is fundamentally flawed.

Stories of Rescue and Sacrifice

Occasionally, the news covers tales of affluent individuals who venture out during storms, only to find themselves in need of rescue. I've long argued that there should be penalties for such reckless behavior, perhaps a fine amounting to 100% of their wealth.

Consider your reaction to that suggestion. Did you think, "That seems excessive!"? If so, recognize that this is the propaganda at work. We've been conditioned to believe that it's never justifiable to take money from billionaires, even when their actions endanger others.

How Social Programming Operates

Oppressors frame issues as moral dilemmas rather than rational ones to mobilize large groups of people. Imagine a scenario where a billionaire heiress rents a helicopter for skiing and gets caught in a storm, resulting in the deaths of six rescue workers. Following the tragedy, she holds a press conference to honor those who died, yet she offers no support to their grieving families.

While this example may seem exaggerated, similar incidents occur alarmingly often. Tragedies on Everest involving wealthy individuals who shouldn't be there happen frequently, and the media often glosses over the real implications.

Billionaires typically evade accountability for their actions, and the press rarely criticizes them. Conversely, the poor are often blamed for their misfortunes, reinforcing harmful societal narratives.

The Need for a Rational Society

Social engineering refers to manipulative tactics that encourage individuals to relinquish their personal data. However, it’s crucial to recognize that this phenomenon extends far beyond identity theft; it’s about how billionaires shape our consciousness to ensure we remain submissive.

When watching Vertical Limit, have you ever paused to consider if it makes sense for six individuals to risk their lives for one billionaire? The billionaire offers a reward of $500,000 for their efforts—why should the rescuers settle for that? They could demand all his wealth, as he is in no position to negotiate.

You might think that such demands would be extortionate, yet every day, billionaires compel workers to accept inadequate wages to survive. No one deems that extortion. There exists a double standard for billionaires, allowing them to evade the consequences of their actions while the impoverished bear the burden.

For billionaires to thrive, the underprivileged must often pay the ultimate price. This reality highlights that the lives of those in poverty are deemed insignificant compared to the wealthy. Your life, too, is undervalued in this system.

Inequity in Sacrifice

It is unjust that some individuals are exempt from the burdens of sacrifice. When a tragedy befalls a poor person, society often responds with indifference, labeling it as deserved due to their socioeconomic status. Only when misfortune strikes someone wealthy do we rally to support them, as if they are inherently more deserving of our compassion.

The accumulation of wealth is not a natural occurrence; it is maintained through societal complicity. The media often vilifies the impoverished while ignoring the massive government subsidies and bailouts that benefit the wealthy.

Recognizing this disparity is essential; the focus on "welfare mothers" distracts us from the reality of the trillions of dollars that flow to the affluent.

Reclaiming the Value of Life

We must reshape our collective perception of wealth. Our beliefs have been engineered to prevent us from questioning whether a billionaire's life is more valuable than our own. This manipulation prepares us for a day when a billionaire may expect us to make sacrifices—not for a life-or-death situation, but to spare them a minor inconvenience.

The existence of billionaires relies on our passive acceptance of their demands. Your life holds equal worth to that of anyone else, and it’s vital to internalize this truth.
