Understanding Recent Earnings Declines on Medium

Hello, everyone. Today’s discussion will be brief, especially since it’s Saturday. However, I must express my frustrations rather than simply provide information. The situation with Medium is quite troubling right now.

Have any of you noticed a significant drop in your earnings over the past week? If you’re like me, you likely monitor your statistics closely. I check mine daily and have a solid grasp of my average earnings across different timeframes.

I maintain two Medium accounts: my primary one with over 27,500 followers and a secondary account nearing 4,500 followers. I pride myself on my ability to track these metrics.

About four or five days ago, I experienced an unexpected dip in earnings. On slower days, I typically earn around $30 to $35, and on stronger days, I often exceed $50-$60. However, I suddenly found myself with only $25 in earnings overnight.

While I understand that dips can happen, this trend continued. My earnings fell further to just $14 yesterday—$13 from my main profile and a mere $1 from the secondary account. I may not be an expert, but I know my writing is worth more than a dollar a day.

I genuinely enjoy writing on Medium and do it out of passion. However, I expect consistent treatment without sudden changes that negatively impact us. Writers deserve fair compensation for their work.

Something seems amiss, and discussions among writers suggest that many are equally frustrated. Medium must recognize the discontent among their writers.

After connecting with fellow Medium writers on our Discord server, I’ve learned that most are experiencing a significant decrease in earnings—some down by more than half, while others are seeing earnings drop to just 10% of what they previously earned. I’m curious if any of you have faced similar issues this past week.

Some have reported difficulties since the new earnings model was implemented on August 1st. I initially faced a slow start after the change, but things quickly improved.
