Gary Glitter, one of the most notable rock musicians from the 1970s, once inspired artists like Freddie Mercury and CeeLo Green. Born Paul Francis Gadd in England, he began his musical journey in the vibrant nightclub scene. By the age of 16, he was already performing under the moniker Paul Raven. In 1971, he transformed his identity into Gary Glitter, propelling his career to new heights.
Mainstream Success and a Downward Spiral
His breakthrough hit, "Rock and Roll," marked the start of Glitter's mainstream popularity. Despite a string of successful releases, his career took a sharp downturn in 1976. What was meant to be a revival turned out to be the prelude to a significant decline.
In 1999, Glitter faced legal troubles when child pornography was discovered on his hard drive, leading to a four-month prison sentence and mandatory registration as a sex offender. Additionally, he had a past relationship with a 14-year-old girl in the 1970s, but he was acquitted of those allegations.
After fleeing to Vietnam, Glitter's notoriety resurfaced in 2005 when he was banned from a nightclub for inappropriate behavior towards teenage girls. He faced accusations of engaging in sexual activities with several Vietnamese minors, aged between 11 and 23. In 2006, he received a three-year prison sentence, yet he continued to deny any wrongdoing related to child exploitation.
Chapter 2: The Reckoning
By 2015, Glitter was arrested once again, facing accusations of multiple charges, including indecent assault and rape. Eventually, he was convicted of attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault, and one count of engaging in sexual acts with a girl under 13, leading to a 16-year prison sentence.
