I Survived a Sudden Cardiac Arrest: A Journey of Resilience

Chapter 1: A Life-Changing Day
On November 14, 2020, around 2:30 PM, I recall visiting the doctor for my regular B12 injection, a routine that typically takes us about 25 minutes for the round trip. After returning home, my common-law husband and I settled in for a nap since I was feeling quite fatigued that early afternoon. During my sleep, I began snoring loudly, but then, to my husband's alarm, I let out one final snore and ceased breathing. He quickly called 911 and performed CPR under the direction of the operator.
They arrived with EMTs who had to don personal protective equipment (PPE) due to COVID-19 protocols. My husband later recounted that police were present, which added to his distress, making him feel like he was being scrutinized rather than supported. Heartbroken, he learned he couldn't accompany me to the hospital, as strict COVID guidelines were in place. The EMTs continued their efforts, and it was revealed that I had been without a heartbeat for 23 minutes.
Upon arrival at the nearest hospital, I was redirected to another facility that could provide the necessary care. I have no recollection of those critical moments, but I remember my husband visiting me when he was finally allowed in. The doctors had placed me in a controlled coma with lowered body temperature to protect my brain from potential damage, a decision they made because of the prolonged lack of oxygen.
Section 1.1: The Healing Process
When I finally woke up after a week under medication, I felt immense joy at the sight of my husband. We shared tears and hugs; his presence was incredibly comforting.
During my stay in the cardiac ICU, I was isolated from other patients. The nurses were visibly stressed and overworked, as each night brought the loss of another patient. I remained in the hospital from November 14 to November 27, 2020, and the sound of heart monitors flatlining became all too familiar.
A few days after regaining consciousness, I was scheduled to receive an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). Reflecting on this experience fills me with gratitude for my husband, whom I continuously thank for his unwavering support. He is my hero, and I love him deeply. Daily, he stood outside the hospital doors waiting for the chance to be by my side, albeit under limited visiting hours and full PPE.

Chapter 2: Embracing Life
The first video titled "Simon's Story – Surviving Sudden Cardiac Arrest" illustrates the journey of someone who overcame similar challenges, showcasing resilience and the strength of love.
As I continue to recover, I remind myself to appreciate each day. I strive to accomplish tasks or personal goals, yet occasionally find myself anxious when I close my eyes to sleep. However, this anxiety has diminished over time.
I’ve made it a point to express my love more openly, whether through words or hugs, to family and friends. I recognize that I am still here for a purpose, and I am actively seeking to understand what that may be.
A note from me to you: "You're beautiful/handsome. You're loved, wanted, and needed. You are stronger than you realize. You can overcome challenges. You are alive for a reason. Don't give up!"
The second video, "Cardiac arrest survivor, Brittany Williams, shares her story of survival and recovery," resonates with my own experience, emphasizing the importance of hope and perseverance.
