As we progressed, I encouraged applying these models toward product development. While models alone do not constitute products, they can be integral to product innovation. Our initial product effort was GitHub Copilot. Admittedly, early attempts faced challenges due to the model's limitations. However, it was only after reaching the capabilities of GPT-3 that we recognized the transformative potential of these models.

DUBNER: Google maintains a dominant share, accounting for about 90 percent of global online search activity. How do you envision the landscape evolving for Bing with ChatGPT over the next five to ten years, and what does this mean for Microsoft’s broader business strategy?

NADELLA: This technology is fundamentally versatile. Beyond specific applications like Bing Chat or ChatGPT, we see reasoning engines becoming part of all our products, including Bing, Microsoft 365, and Dynamics 365. In this context, I’m enthusiastic about the implications for search. While Google undeniably leads the search market, we have persevered over the years, waiting for a pivotal moment to transform the search paradigm. The competition between Bing and Bard will be significant, particularly given Google’s established dominance and user habits. It’s important to recognize the influence of defaults, as Google controls key platforms such as Android, iOS, and Chrome. However, anytime there’s a shift in the landscape, opportunities arise, and we are ready to compete aggressively.
