Recently, many may have heard about the earthquake that struck Mexico on September 19, registering a magnitude of 7.1. This event marks the third time an earthquake has occurred on this date in Mexico, with previous incidents in 1985 and 2017. This recurrence has led some to speculate about potential connections beyond mere coincidence, while others promote sensationalized or mystical interpretations. The aim of this blog is to clarify essential information regarding earthquake hazards and preventive measures.

What Is an Earthquake?

We generally agree that an earthquake is a result of ground movement. However, misconceptions about their origins persist, often fueled by anti-scientific propaganda. For instance, astrology suggests that planetary positions influence terrestrial events, which is highly questionable. Some even link earthquakes to the "law of attraction," claiming they occur merely because people expect them to, ignoring the fact that our thoughts have no impact on geological processes.

An earthquake is fundamentally a ground vibration caused by a rapid release of energy, usually linked to the slipping of the Earth's crust along faults due to tectonic activity. Other minor earthquakes can be triggered by volcanic eruptions, significant meteorite impacts, or nuclear explosions, all of which can cause underground disturbances.

As far as we know, earthquakes occur only on Earth and not on any other celestial bodies.

How Do They Manifest and Where Do We Know They Originate?

As mentioned, an earthquake is recognized through ground movement, but this process is quite intricate.

Seismographs are instruments that provide data on seismic wave behavior, which are categorized into surface waves and body waves. Surface waves move along the ground, causing it to sway akin to ocean waves, while body waves include "Primary Waves," which compress and expand rocks in the direction they travel, and "Secondary Waves," which shake particles at right angles to their path. Among these, Primary Waves are the first to arrive, followed by Secondary Waves, and finally surface waves, which often cause the most destruction.

Seismic waves emanate from an origin point called the "hypocenter," with the corresponding surface point directly above it known as the "epicenter." Seismic stations are vital for identifying these points. The calculation method is straightforward; since Primary Waves travel faster than Secondary Waves, the time difference in their arrivals at a station indicates distance. By obtaining data from three different seismic stations, one can determine the epicenter's exact location.

For this reason, seismic stations play a crucial role.

Is It Possible to Predict an Earthquake?

Countries prone to earthquakes, including Russia, the United States, and Japan, have invested considerable effort into predicting seismic events. They focus on identifying signs or precursors, such as studying active faults or observing unusual animal behavior that may signal an impending quake. However, a reliable prediction system has yet to be established.

Many countries have adopted earthquake alarms. These devices do not predict earthquakes but alert people when one is on the way, allowing emergency protocols to be enacted seconds in advance, potentially saving lives.

Aftershocks often follow a significant earthquake. For example, on September 21, Mexico experienced a strong aftershock of 6.9 in the Michoacan region, following the earlier quake on September 19. These aftershocks usually occur due to ground adjustments following the primary quake.

Intensity Scale

Throughout life, one often hears references to "degrees" in relation to earthquake strength. However, unless one has experienced such quakes firsthand, the destructive power may be hard to comprehend. A 4.0 magnitude quake may go unnoticed, while an 8.0 quake can be catastrophic.

The most recognized scale for measuring earthquakes is the Richter scale, created by Charles Richter in 1935. This scale is based on the amplitude of the largest seismic wave recorded. Since seismic waves diminish in strength as the distance from the hypocenter increases, Richter developed a method that accounts for this decrease, ensuring all stations record the same magnitude for each earthquake.

Each unit of magnitude on this scale corresponds to a 32-fold increase in energy. Thus, a magnitude 7 earthquake releases 32 times more energy than a magnitude 6 and 1000 times more than a magnitude 5.

Importance of Earthquakes

Earthquakes of varying magnitudes have caused immeasurable destruction throughout history, known only to those who have experienced them. They can trigger landslides and tsunamis and sometimes lead to fires.

The dynamic nature of our planet has been illuminated by the study of earthquakes. These studies have unveiled the Earth’s internal structure and may aid in understanding other celestial bodies. They have also deepened our comprehension of plate tectonics, with the distribution of earthquakes providing consistent evidence for this theory. While it may seem insignificant to those outside the scientific community, plate tectonics has driven continental movement over millions of years, shaping life on Earth. For example, had Central America never formed, the animal species found in South America would differ dramatically from those in North America. In essence, we have evolved alongside our planet—a reminder that our future hinges on the choices we make regarding our environment.
