Harnessing Stoicism for Effective Leadership in the Digital Age

Chapter 1: The Intersection of Philosophy and Technology

Philosophy serves as a versatile framework that transcends various domains, allowing individuals to implement its principles in diverse ways. For Michael McGill, Stoicism has not only refined his leadership skills but also enhanced his effectiveness as an IT professional. I had a fruitful conversation with Michael regarding his experiences with Stoicism and its significance in leadership.

I operate at the crossroads of technology, leadership development, and Stoicism. My goal is to create resources that facilitate the implementation of these principles…

I appreciate the opportunity to speak with you, Michael. In a previous interview, you mentioned that your introduction to Stoicism was through Ryan Holiday’s The Obstacle Is The Way. You indicated that diving directly into Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations might not have been as enlightening without prior philosophical context. How do you believe modern interpretations of philosophy can enhance our understanding of ancient wisdom?

It's a pleasure to be here, and thank you for having me! I believe it comes down to "accessibility." For instance, if someone picks up an older version of Meditations, they might struggle with the archaic language. In contrast, a contemporary translation, like Gregory Hays’, is significantly more approachable for today’s readers. Understanding Stoicism before delving into the original texts can greatly enrich the experience. I found it beneficial to have someone explain the foundational concepts of Stoicism, which helped me appreciate the writings of the Stoics more deeply.

Section 1.1: Key Stoic Principles

What are the core Stoic themes that resonate with you the most?

The central idea of acknowledging what we can and cannot control stands out to me. By adopting this perspective, we can significantly reduce stress and anxiety in our lives. Before embracing Stoicism, I often found myself overwhelmed by concerns beyond my influence. Now, when I feel anxious about a situation, I ask myself: “What control do I have over this?” If the answer is “none,” I let it go.

Subsection 1.1.1: Leadership in Crisis

As a CIO in the tech industry, how do you leverage Stoicism to lead effectively?

The IT landscape is challenging—servers fail, cybersecurity threats loom, and software issues arise. It’s easy to feel stressed, but as leaders, our responses set the tone for our teams. If they see us panicking, they may follow suit. Remaining calm and objective in crises is essential, and Stoicism equips leaders to manage stress, enhancing their effectiveness.

Section 1.2: Stoicism as a Life Framework

How do you relate Stoicism to the world of IT?

I view Stoicism as a life operating system. Just as an OS provides the necessary instructions for a computer to function optimally, Stoicism offers a framework for leading a successful life. It also serves as a tool for "debugging" our mental processes. Many negative thought patterns are ingrained in us by society, family, and education. Stoicism helps us correct these flaws, promoting healthier mindsets—transforming selfishness into altruism, emotions into objectivity, and resistance into acceptance.

Chapter 2: Daily Practice and Reflection

The first video, "5 Simple Stoic Lessons to Get Control Of Your Life," featuring Michael McGill, outlines practical Stoic strategies for personal empowerment.

What motivated you to share your daily Stoic reflections on Twitter?

I follow what I call the “SPR” method in Stoicism: Study, Practice, and Reflect. Studying involves daily readings of Stoic texts, practicing entails applying these lessons in real life, and reflecting is my nightly journaling where I assess my Stoic practice. Sharing my Stoic Thought of the Day on Twitter emerged from my desire to help others and promote Stoicism.

Do you have any critiques of Stoicism?

While I don’t hold strong disagreements with Stoicism, I caution against complacency. It’s easy to dismiss issues by saying “I cannot control that,” when in fact, we might have the power to influence change—like participating in political processes or community actions.

Outside of Stoicism, what other philosophical works interest you?

Stoicism is my primary focus, but I have explored other philosophical texts. One notable favorite is the Bhagavad Gita, which aligns well with Stoic principles, especially the idea of detachment. It emphasizes that while we can control our actions, we cannot dictate their outcomes. For example, I can prepare thoroughly for a speech, but I cannot control the audience's reaction.

What upcoming projects excite you?

I’m always engaged in various professional endeavors, but I’m particularly enthusiastic about personal projects. I’m currently writing two books: one, titled The IT Leadership Blueprint, focuses on essential skills for IT professionals, including Stoicism. It’s nearly complete and should be published by year-end. The second is a collection of daily Stoic reflections, which is about 80% finished and tentatively set for early 2022 release.

Thank you for reading! I’m dedicated to making philosophy appealing and impactful, and your support can help me achieve this vision. Consider joining Medium as a paid member through my referral link to support great writers and content.
