Life Lessons for Happiness and Success in Your Forties

Written on

Chapter 1: Reflections from My Forties

As I reflect on my younger years, I realize I made several questionable choices—not the kind that lead to serious trouble but rather decisions that haunt you in the quiet of night. Many times, I stood at a crossroads and, almost predictably, chose the less favorable path. In those moments, I couldn’t quite grasp why I opted for certain directions; however, with the clarity that comes with age, I can now discern the influences that shaped my decisions, many of which I was oblivious to at the time.

In recent years, I've been on a personal growth journey, experimenting with healthier eating, consistent sleep patterns, journaling, and meditation, among other practices. Now, as I approach my 43rd birthday, I feel a sense of contentment with my life. However, the road to this state of happiness was anything but straightforward. Based on my experiences, there are three key pieces of advice I wish I could share with my younger self.

Section 1.1: Avoid Comparisons with Others

It's human instinct to compare ourselves to those around us. I often found myself envious of others with bigger homes, fancier cars, and seemingly better lives. As a child, I felt this way too, though I lacked the words to express it. I envied peers with superior grades, newer gaming systems, and romantic relationships while I seemed to have none of those. I spent so much time yearning for what others had that I failed to appreciate my own blessings, like a vacation at a modest caravan park while others enjoyed trips to Disneyland.

Looking back, I have bittersweet feelings about those moments. I now recognize the value of those experiences, even if I didn't at the time. The key takeaway is to focus on what you have rather than what you lack. You'll find greater happiness in appreciating your own life.

Section 1.2: Strive for Your Best

Throughout my academic and professional life, I held a belief that destiny would take care of itself—that if something was meant for me, it would come without much effort. This mindset led me to avoid putting in the necessary work, stemming from a fear of failure. I was reluctant to commit to anything, fearing that mistakes would lead to self-blame. I viewed life in absolutes: success or failure, right or wrong.

However, I've since redefined success. I now evaluate it based on the effort I put in rather than the results. If I give my all and the outcome isn’t what I hoped for, I still view it as a success. The only real failure, I’ve realized, occurs when I don’t try.

Section 1.3: The Importance of Mindful Decision-Making

I have a tendency to act impulsively—whether it was quitting jobs, ending relationships, or making spontaneous purchases. This impulsiveness has often extended into my professional life, where I would sometimes agree to take on additional work without a clear rationale. There have been instances where my impulsive words led to regrettable situations, especially in heated discussions.

In my quest for improvement, I've focused on pausing before reacting. Inspired by "The Chimp Paradox" by Prof. Steve Peters, I've learned to recognize the emotional side of my brain that often drives my decisions. By taking a moment to consider my responses, I've found my life to be less stressful and more manageable.

Final Thoughts

Although I cannot go back in time to impart these lessons to my younger self, I now have the opportunity to share them with my children. I hope to guide them away from the mistakes I made. Perhaps you can draw wisdom from my experiences as well.
