Navigating New Work Environments as a Neurodivergent Individual

Chapter 1: Embracing Change in the Workplace
Entering a new job can be daunting, particularly for someone on the autism spectrum. As a woman on the spectrum in my forties, I believed I had reached a point of self-acceptance where the opinions of others mattered little. Yet, as I prepare to embark on this new professional journey, I feel the familiar pull to conform.
While I won't be engaging in extensive social activities like group trips or after-work drinks, I am not quite ready to reveal my authentic self to my new team right away.
This time around, I've made subtle adjustments. In my current role, I began to shed my social facade by skipping the crowded lunchroom, opting instead for solitary breaks to recharge. This brief respite allows me to restore my energy until I return home.
In my upcoming position, I plan to have lunch with my new colleagues. The smaller team size is a welcome change, and I hope the lunchroom will not be overly crowded. Additionally, I will need to engage in small talk, which I find challenging, but I recognize its importance in building rapport.
I anticipate these minor adjustments will not overwhelm me, yet they are essential for making a positive impression.
Section 1.1: Striking a Balance
My intention is not to conceal my autism but rather to avoid leading with it. I want my performance to speak for itself, rather than my social abilities, or lack thereof. I aim to gradually introduce my true self to my colleagues.
Once I have established that I am a valuable member of the team, I will feel more comfortable letting my guard down. Until then, I intend to blend in and take a cautious approach.
