Polestar's Bold Journey Towards a Carbon-Neutral Future

Written on

Chapter 1: The Vision Behind Polestar 0

As Polestar accelerates its vehicle production in the early stages of its growth, the company is simultaneously embarking on ambitious future projects. Among these is the Polestar 0 initiative, which aspires to produce the first-ever completely zero-emissions car by the decade's end. Recent updates indicate that significant progress is being made toward this ambitious target.

Polestar is experiencing rapid growth, outpacing many of its rivals. In 2020, the company reported revenues of $645 million, reflecting a staggering 600% increase from 2019, according to WCCTech. This momentum continued in 2021, with 29,000 vehicles sold—a remarkable 185% rise from the previous year.

The company is not planning to slow down anytime soon. Their goal is to manufacture 290,000 vehicles by 2025. Moreover, Polestar aims to innovate beyond merely assembling cars, as evidenced by their commitment to creating a carbon-neutral vehicle through the Polestar O initiative.

Polestar first introduced the Polestar 0 project to the public in April 2021. Given the ambitious nature of the endeavor, they set a target completion date of 2030, allowing ample time to align all necessary components. The company intends to develop a vehicle from the ground up that entirely eliminates emissions, self-financing the project to avoid external funding that often accompanies such transformative innovations.

The project is structured into three main phases: research, advanced engineering, and product development. The research phase focuses on identifying collaborators who can help trace the technical sources of CO2 emissions throughout various stages of the supply chain and propose solutions. This examination will cover everything from the manufacturing process to rethinking the smallest components that comprise a vehicle.

While electric vehicles are generally more environmentally friendly than their fossil fuel counterparts, they still contribute to significant emissions. Liang Lei from Eco-Business notes that each Polestar 2 generates approximately 26 tonnes of carbon dioxide during its production, with over a quarter of that stemming from battery manufacturing. However, emissions significantly decrease once these vehicles are in operation. In addition to launching the Polestar 0, Polestar aims to achieve complete carbon neutrality as a company by 2040.

Recent reports from Nick Carey of Reuters highlight that Polestar has made notable advancements in the research phase of their planning. The company has secured letters of intent with various suppliers capable of providing carbon-neutral components for the vehicles. These partners include Swedish steelmaker SSAB, airbag and seatbelt manufacturer Autoliv, zero-carbon aluminum producer Hydro, and ZKW Group, which specializes in lighting and electronic systems.

Polestar's CEO, Thomas Ingenlath, expressed enthusiasm for these partnerships, stating, "It was clear from the start that this is not a solo mission and we are very excited to present such a strong lineup of interested partners."

Electrek's Scooter Doll also reported insights from Hans Pehrson, who oversees the Polestar 0 project. He emphasized the importance of harnessing innovative climate solution technologies: "For this project, we must tap into solutions that are still in the innovation stage. Even more exciting is that the solutions we develop will not only benefit the automotive industry overall but help decarbonize manufacturing and society more widely as well. Wherever we look in the world, we see materials like steel, aluminum, electronics, and rubber. Imagine when we can make these materials climate-neutral to produce. Together, we can make the seemingly impossible happen."

Despite the clear progress made in assembling a team to facilitate the Polestar 0 initiative, the company continues to seek additional partners. They have an active listing with the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) to attract others who can contribute to bringing this vehicle to fruition.

At the time of publication, Polestar (GGPI) shares were trading at $11.07 each.
